This is the 48 hour surface forecast produced by the American National Weather Service marine forecast. As you can see there is a low centered just below Newfoundland and as the winds around a low turn counter clockwise, the isobars shown over the Gulf of St. Lawrence where I am are fairly close together and coming down north east. The isobars being close means higher winds.

These weather models are just used as guides to reinforce the other forecasts produce by a number of sources.
